Summer 2005 Dryland Training with Al Forsyth
| Hi Everyone,
We have had a really good response to these dryland sessions. We will continue dryland on Monday evenings but will roll over to another date if it needs to. We meet at 6:30 pm Monday nights at Immaculate High School, about a mile south of the ice rink at 73 Southern Blvd., Danbury, CT 06810 [Click below for a map:] http://www.smartpages.com/home/immaculatehighschool1?Mode=Map

THE HARLEM
VALLEY RAIL TRAIL IS A GOOD IDEA THAT KEEPS ON GROWING!
The Trail is now 11 miles long. The northern section from Coleman Station to Millerton is as smooth as glass, almost like ice skating. And the nine-year-old middle section was recently repaved (thank you Dutchess County and Volunteers!) In October of 2004 the contractor paved the three miles from Amenia south to the Wassaic Station of the Metro North RR. You city folks can ride the train north from Grand Central, and skate for miles and miles! Click here for a map of the middle and upper part of the Trail (99Kb file.) Twenty-two miles round trip -- a great two-hour workout, or a whole afternoon of family fun, maybe biking and skating together! Directions to Harlem Valley Rail Trail, Amenia, NY: From the intersection of Interstate 84 and NY State Route 22 near Brewster. Travel north on State Route 22 for 33 miles to the only traffic light in Amenia, NY. Turn right on NY 343. Go one block. Turn right onto Mechanic St. Go a block and park in the Rail Trail parking lot on the left. On busy days follow direction signs for overflow parking. Lace up and go south 2.8 miles, skate back, and then go 8.2 miles up to Millerton and back. Click here for a map from Brewster to Amenia, NY. (121Kb file.) |

The Saratoga Winter Club's Camp with Coach Pat Maxwell July 15-17, 2005
The Danbury Speedskating Club sent 19 participants this year. Here's some Club-interest 2005 photos:
DSC Couple Takes Ellis Edge Master's Camp, August
15-20, 2004.
Tom and Suzanne spent their summer vacation in beautiful New Brunswick roaming the Acadian beaches and parks, kayaking the tides of
Fundy, and enjoying the seafood.
But the best part was five days at the Ellis Edge
Master's Camp! Here
they learned how to maximize power in skating. The dry land training
method is new this year due to the invention of "Techni-cords."
These are adjustable stretch cords training aid to engage just the right muscles
in the
five strokes: right and left straight-away stroke, right and left leg
cornering, and the start. Techni-cords allow the athlete to feel the
push through the ball of the foot and hold the position for several
seconds. This promotes "muscle memory" and balance that
translates into correct technique on the ice.

Suzanne and Tom gained confidence in their new technical
skills during the Masters Camp. Let's see who learned the most.
Tom thinks he's in trouble already:

.........
2003: I first worked with Susan Ellis as an asst. coach along with Al Forsyth in the
summer of 2002 at Lake Placid.
It was a privilege and an honor when she asked me to lend a hand at her camps this past Summer.
Her technical expertise IS BAR NONE. So as a technical maniac myself you can see where I welcomed the opportunity.
Fun was not left out of the equation. We had a bonfire on the beach singing among other an American and Canadian
version of THIS LAND IS MY LAND....also the "English Muffin" "French Toast" shouts to replace
"Compress/Release" was a good fun way to get a technical point across. The
beach party with the sun going down was a memorable time.
The town was a 5 minute walk from the dorms and rink, a haven of restaurants and activities
-- kayaking and whale watching to
mention a few. (If you're inviting Sue E. out for dinner DO NOT go for sea food.)
Tim received the MOST IMPROVED SKATER AWARD and that should make all of us at DSC
proud. A learning experience and a fun time.
